The Greek island that is isolated by law for a good cause

The most famous lake island in Greece is certainly the island of Lake Ioannina. And it may be the largest, but it is not the only one in Greece. So there is an island in a lake that is abandoned and isolated for a good cause.

We are talking about Vidronisi, the abandoned Greek lake island in Prespes. A beautiful and magical place, like the whole Prespes area. Vidronisi is an island of life, as it is home to dozens of birds. The landscape is magical, especially if you have the opportunity to look at it from above.

There is a simple reason why no one is allowed to go there. Many birds have built their nests on this unknown Greek island of the lake and so their homes are protected. If everyone could go there in a boat, it is certain that the birds would be disturbed and the chicks could be in danger.

Even the small church, consecrated to Agios Georgios and located on the islet, is abandoned and left unused to protect the pelicans and cormorants. There, the rare species can grow up undisturbed and safe because there is no human element.

If you could visit it, you would see nests made on the trees. The same happens in the reeds or even on rocks. It’s a landscape full of life and tranquility. It is also less known that on the small Greek island of Limnissi there are the ruins of a temple that has been declared protected.

Escape to Prespes

Autumn is the ideal time to visit Prespes and get to know the natural beauty of the area. Prespes is a water paradise that every nature lover should get to know and discover its secrets. About 260 species of birds live there and they manage to coexist harmoniously with over 40 species of mammals, 11 species of amphibians, 15 species of fish and 20 species of reptiles.

What you should not miss when you go to Prespes is a visit to the village of Agios Achilleios. The reason for this is the small but very famous islet of Little Prespa. You will find yourself walking across a floating jetty that was built for this purpose. It's a place of absolute peace where you close your ears and enjoy the majesty of nature. If you are interested in extending your stay, there is a guest house and restaurant on the island.

Agios Germanos is an equally popular destination in Prespes. It used to be the large village of Prespes. You will find it in a beautiful location at an altitude of 1,040 meters. It is one of the most touristy villages in the area.
