A striking mural of Laskarina Bouboulina now stands prominently at the port of Montevideo, Uruguay, honoring the legendary heroine of the Greek War of Independence.
The mural was created at the entrance of the Tsakos Foundation, an institution founded by the Greek shipping magnate in the South American country. This artistic tribute not only commemorates Bouboulina’s legacy but also highlights the crucial role of maritime forces and women in the fight for independence—especially as Greece marks the 200th anniversary of the Revolution.
Established in 1971, the Tsakos Foundation has long been dedicated to promoting Greek culture. Recently, it was officially recognized by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs as an official branch for teaching the Greek language.
Since its inception, the foundation has provided free Greek language, history, and culture lessons to nearly 4,000 students, including many Uruguayan Philhellenes.
