Schools in Paros to Remain Closed on Tuesday, April 1
The Cyclades have been battered by severe weather since Monday morning, with heavy rain and hailstorms causing flooding in Syros and Paros.
Paros Mayor Konstantinos Bizas told Newsbomb about the extensive damage caused so far, with local authorities on high alert for worsening conditions:
"The weather is much worse now, as we are also dealing with strong winds in addition to heavy rainfall. There has been significant damage, particularly to the road network, as walls, fences, and boulders have collapsed, blocking traffic. Municipal and DEYAP (water and sewage service) crews were immediately dispatched to clear the roads."
⚠️🆘 Shocking Scenes from Naoussa, Paros
"Severe problems have also been reported in Naoussa, where a river overflowed near a bridge, sweeping away multiple parked vehicles. At 5:00 PM, we requested a new 112 emergency alert to ban travel on the island. A rescue helicopter from EMAK arrived from Athens to assist, with additional support expected from Naxos. We will remain on high alert through the night as the extreme weather continues," Bizas added.
The mayor also confirmed that schools in Paros will likely remain closed on Tuesday (April 1) due to the ongoing storm.
