A surreal landscape. That’s how one might describe the scenes emerging from Mount Etna in Italy.
Mount Etna, the tallest and most active volcano in Europe, erupted last Wednesday (February 12, 2025) at 10:30 am local time, producing a spectacular display of lava, fire, and smoke.
Rivers of Lava on Snowy Slopes
Lava flowed from the Bocca Nuova crater, cascading down the snow-covered slopes of the volcano and traveling over 2 kilometers. The contrast between the fiery red lava and the white snow created a breathtaking, almost otherworldly spectacle.
An incredible video posted on social media shows skiers performing slalom maneuvers between the snow and flowing lava, showcasing the unique coexistence of winter sports and volcanic activity.

A Volcanic Giant Awakens
Mount Etna becomes active every year, although the intensity varies each time. It remains the most active volcano in Europe, with the last major eruption occurring in 1992.
Warning Signs Before the Eruption
Scientists had detected signs of the impending eruption days earlier. On February 7, at 4:00 pm, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Aeolian Islands in the province of Messina.
On February 10, shortly after 10:30 am, a series of smaller quakes ranging from 2.3 to 3.7 in magnitude were recorded near the village of Linguaglossa, north of Mount Etna.
Simultaneously, explosions from the southeastern crater and increased lava flow indicated that the volcano was accumulating enormous amounts of energy.
Nature's Spectacle
Mount Etna's eruption is a powerful reminder of nature's raw force and beauty. It serves as both a source of awe and a testament to the dynamic geological activity that shapes our planet.
As the lava continues to flow and the snow-covered slopes stand in stark contrast to the fiery rivers, the world watches in amazement at the mesmerizing power of Mount Etna.
