The largest herd of horses of the Greek race Pindos in Europe
At Ano Poroia of Serres, at the foot of Mount Beles, near Lake Kerkini, Nikos Varkas lives. A traveler and horse lover who has over 700 horses under his supervision.
He started his tours 20 years ago with 6 borrowed horses and with his hard work he managed to build up the biggest herd of the Greek breed Pindos in Europe. With great dedication and incredible personal attention he maintains a population of 700 horses.
The Greek horse was an endangered species and coexisted with man since ancient times, helping Greek agriculture, cattle breeding and deforestation.
Today they are also used in tourism, so you can take a tour with a horse in the beautiful forest of Mount Beles.
