In the ancient city of Delphi used to be the greatest oracle of the ancient Greek world. References about the city have been noticed since Homer’s time, which at the time was called “Pytho”. At the beginning of historical time it was one of the many cities of Focis, but the importance of the city grew steadily, and, as a result, it turned into a panhellenic hotspot and a sacred city of the ancient Greeks. It was also the core of the Amphictyonic League.

Delphi preserved its prestige until the 4th century BC, when the oracle was shut down by Theodosius I. In the centuries that followed, the city fell into decay and was completely abandoned during the slavic raids.
