As part of the “Connecting Greece with the Future” initiative, Navarino CSR has installed an Elon Musk Starlink satellite system in the municipality of Nisyros. This technological milestone was paired with a meaningful reforestation effort along the island’s coastline, organized in collaboration with the Cultural Association “Diavatis”.
Bringing Cutting-Edge Connectivity to Nisyros
In mid-March, Navarino’s Land Rover, driven by Akis Temperidis, the leader of the “The World Offroad” project and the company’s “Green Ambassador”, arrived on the island for its second mission of the year.
The initiative aims to enhance Nisyros’ technological infrastructure and promote its bid for inclusion in UNESCO’s Global Geopark Network (UGGp). As an active volcano within Greece’s South Aegean Volcanic Arc, Nisyros holds significant geological importance, making it a prime candidate for global recognition.
Following discussions with Mayor Christofis Koronaios and the Municipal Committee, Navarino installed a third-generation Starlink system on the roof of the Town Hall in Mandraki.
This high-speed satellite internet service will be provided free of charge for at least three years. The municipality’s staff were amazed by the unprecedented connection speeds of up to 370 Mbps, a game-changer for the island.
"This donation is invaluable to both the municipality and its residents. The high-speed network will greatly improve communication and services. I sincerely thank Navarino for this generous contribution," said Mayor Christofis Koronaios.
Planting the Seeds of Sustainability
On Sunday, March 17, in collaboration with the Cultural Association “Diavatis”, Navarino organized a tree-planting event on Lies Beach, located on the northern coast of Nisyros.
Approximately 30 volunteers, led by the association’s president, Giorgos Koukourakis, planted 30 tamarisks (Tamarix) in the sandy areas and 25 chaste trees (Vitex agnus-castus) on the slopes. These species were chosen for their resilience to Nisyros’ dry and saline soil conditions.
According to Mr. Koukourakis, this effort will help combat coastal erosion, which threatens the shrinking shoreline due to deforestation caused by uncontrolled grazing.
Showcasing Nisyros to the World
Navarino’s short expedition to Nisyros will also result in a mini-documentary, highlighting the island’s natural beauty and cultural significance in the Southeastern Aegean.
