Trump’s Greek-American Advisor Calls for New Leadership in Greece

George Papadopoulos, the Greek-American advisor to Donald Trump, has issued a harsh critique of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his government. In a strongly worded social media post, Papadopoulos described “new leadership” as the “only solution” for Greece’s future, providing insight into how the country’s current leadership is perceived across the Atlantic.

Papadopoulos emphasized that Greece, as an Orthodox nation, “could have played a key role as a mediator between the U.S. and Russia” but argued that “the current Greek leadership failed to seize the opportunity.”

He listed several of the government’s major missteps, including its full-throated support of NATO, noting that “Greece’s historical rival, Turkey, has taken on the role of mediator and expanded its influence.”

Papadopoulos also highlighted the “war against the Church” and the “military support for Ukraine” as decisions that have cost the government dearly.

Papadopoulos’ Post:

The current Greek leadership failed to seize the moment. Greece could have played a key interlocutor role between the U.S.-Russia, as an orthodox country, and one with historic ties to both nations, similarly to how it does between Arab nations and Israel. It decided to go all in with NATO. While Greece’s historic rival Turkey took over the role as a mediator and expanded its footprint. Domestically, the war against the church has been extremely unpopular as has war support for Ukraine. The future of Greece is pro orthodox, mediator between the east and west, as it has historically been, and a pillar of stability in an otherwise unstable region. For this to happen new leadership there is the only solution.

Papadopoulos’ statements add to the growing international discourse surrounding the policies of the Mitsotakis government, painting a picture of missed opportunities and internal discontent.
