Panagiotis Karipoglou, the President of the Serres Bar Association, has announced his intention to file a formal complaint with the chief prosecutor regarding the ongoing fire on Mount Orvilos, near Greece's northern border with Bulgaria. The blaze, which has been raging for an alarming 28 days, has yet to receive any aerial firefighting support, according to a report by public broadcaster ERT on Wednesday.
The fire's persistence is particularly concerning as it continues to burn through a dangerous minefield left over from the Second World War, further complicating efforts to contain it. This lack of response has prompted Karipoglou to take legal action, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
In a statement shared on social media, Karipoglou expressed his deep frustration: "We cannot remain passive while our northern border region and the residents of Serres suffer." He emphasized the severe ecological damage being inflicted on the protected forest lands of the area, noting that while residential zones are not currently at risk, the environmental toll is devastating.
The situation underscores the need for immediate and decisive action to prevent further destruction in this vital region.
