Tribute: All the Heroes of the Greek Revolution of 1821 - From Kolokotronis to Markos Botsaris

These were the chiefs and emblematic figures of the Greek Revolution:

Theodoros Kolokotronis (April 3, 1770 - February 4, 1843) was a Greek captain, general with a leading role in the 1821 Revolution, politician, procurator, advisor to the State. He also became known as the Elder of Moria.

George Karaiskakis or Karaiskos was a Greek revolutionary who became a general in the Revolution of 1821.

His surname is a diminutive of Karaiskos, where it is found as a family name in the provinces of Valtos, Karpenisi, Farsala, Karditsa, Vonitsa, etc. According to one version, he owes it to his probable father, Dimitrios Karaiskos.

According to another version, "the name Karaiskakis is a compound of the word kara (black in Turkish) and iska, due to its tough character".

Giannis Makrygiannis (1797 - 1864) was a fighter of the Greek Revolution of 1821, a military and active politician after the foundation of the free Greek state. Self-taught author of memoirs (Memoirs of Makrygiannis), which are unique for their style and narratives of popular visions.

Athanasios Diakos was one of the Greek protagonist heroes - chiefs of the first year of the Revolution of 1821, who acted in Central Greece.

According to Gouras, Philemon, Perraivos and foreigners such as Finley and Bartholdy, and also Hertsberg, he was born in 1788 in Artotina, Fokida, according to others in Ano Mousounitsa, Fokida.

And there is a controversy about his real name. Some say it was Athanasios Grammatikos and others that he was Athanasios Massavetas. He was initiated into the "Filiki Etaireia"(a secret organization of the Revolution) in 1818 and in 1820 he became a boatswain in Livadia.

In April 1821, in collaboration with other chiefs, he captured the fort of Livadia and fought many victorious battles from there. He occupied the bridge of Alamana and on April 22, 1821, he fought with the troops of Omer Vryonis. In this battle, he was arrested and after being transferred to Lamia, he was killed by the Turks by impaling and burned on April 24, 1821. The Greek Army honorably awarded him the rank of General.

Rigas Velestinlis or Rigas Feraios is considered a national martyr and forerunner of the Greek Revolution of 1821

He signed himself "Rigas Velestinlis" or "Rigas o Thessalos" and never "Feraios", which could be a creation of later scholars.

He was born in Velestino, the old Feres, in 1757, and came of a wealthy family. All that is known of his youth is that his father's name was Georgios Kyriazis (his grandfather Konstantinos Kyriazis or Kyratzis, from the Perivoli of Grevena, settled in Velestino, which had become a parish of Perivoli, in the early 18th century), while his mother's name was Maria and she is said to have had a sister, Asimo.

Francis Puckeville mentions that he also had a brother, Kostis, who even took part in the revolution of 1821. His family was among the victims of the Turkish rage. Only his mother and brother survived and were transported to Wallachia, where they were cared for by Rigas.

Grigorios Dikaios or Papaflessas (his real name was Georgios Dimitrios Flessas, which is disputed by historians of the time, among others, who claim that his real name was Georgios Dimitrios Dikaios.

According to this view, the surname "Flessas" is considered a nickname of the family) (1788-1825) or better known as Papaflessas or Gregory Dikaios or Burlotieris(fire starter) of the Souls was a clergyman, politician and fighter, a hero of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Konstantinos Kanaris (Psara 1793 or 1795 - Athens 2 September 1877) was an important figure in naval combat during the Greek Revolution of 1821 and later admiral and politician who served five times as Prime Minister of Greece for a period of 33.5 years (1844, 1848-49, 1864, 1864-65 and 1877) and for 2 years and 3 months in total.

Laskarina Bouboulina (11 May 1771 - 22 May 1825) was a Greek heroine of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Nikitas Stamatelopoulos or Nikitaras or Turkofagos (1782-1849) was born in Nedousa (Greater Anastasova), a small village at the foot of Mount Taygetos, 25 km from the city of Kalamata. He came from the village of Tourkoleka, in the municipality of Falaisia in Megalopolis.

He was the nephew of Theodoros Kolokotronis. He also signed under the name Tourkolekas or Tourkolakiotis, referring to some folk songs. Ultimately, however, the surname Stamatelopoulos prevailed, derived from his father's baptismal name (Stamatelos).

Kitsos Tzavelas or Tsavelas (Souli 1800- Athens 1855) was a Greek fighter of the revolution of '21 from Souli of Epirus and later a general, minister and prime minister.

Andreas Miaoulis - Vokos (Hydra 20 May 1769 - 11 June 1835 Piraeus) was a Greek shipowner who played a leading role in the revolution of 1821, as commanding admiral of the Greek fleet, but also in the later political life of the place, culminating in the revolt of Hydra against Kapodistrias, which led to the burning of the national fleet in Poros.

In the last years of his life he was honored several times by the Ottoman regime, while he was included in the three-man committee that offered the crown to the then young Otto. He was the head of the Miaoulis family and his son was the future Prime Minister of Greece, Athanasios Miaoulis.

Markos Botsaris (1790 - 8 or 9 August 1823) was a general and hero of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and captain of Souliotes. He was born in Souli and was the second son of Kitsos Botsaris, who was one of the most prominent figures of Souli.

After the fall of Souli he went with other Souliotes to Corfu, where he was commissioned as a non-commissioned officer in the corps of Epirotes and Souliotes formed by the French. In 1814 he became a member of "Filiki Etaireia".

Odysseas Androutsos was born in December 1790 in a view in Preveza and in another in Ithaca, and was slain on the Acropolis of Athens on June 5, 1825.

He was a prominent militant leader of the 1821 revolution and the son of Chief Androutsos. The family name (Italian Andruzzo) refers to the famous Libro d'Oro of the island, and his mother was Akrivi Charlamba, from Preveza. Also in terms of birth year, according to others, Odysseas Androutsos was born between the years 1788-1790.



Nikolaos Stournaras (later Stournaris) (... -1826) was a chief in the area of Etoloakarnania from Stournareika. His armatoliki (battalion) was located in the area of Aspropotamos and was a famous center of the armed forces during the period of Ali Pasha.

Alexandros Ypsilantis (1792-1828), was a Greek prince, soldier, scholar and leader of "Filiki Etaireia".
