They are built near rugged paths that the locals used to cross with mules to transport goods. They carried their goods to the most remote villages of Ioannina.

When rivers and torrents burst their banks, the stone bridges made access easier for any passer-by who was traveling in winter. The bridges differ in shape, size and number of arches. The arches can be one, two, three or more, semicircular or with pointed tips. These arches are the characteristic feature of the stone bridge.

The villages of the Prefecture of Ioannina that had remarkable stone masons are Pyrsogianni, the Molista, Chouliarades, Pramanta, Plikati, Vourbiani, etc. In the whole prefecture there are scattered stone bridges in villages like Metsovo, Zagorochoria, the area of Pogoni, Zitsa Konitsa of North Tzoumerka. Many bridges, built in inaccessible areas, which are forgotten with time, are still standing - waiting patiently for the hiker to pass them.
