Mountainous Arcadia fascinates at any time of the year with its unique natural landscape, its rich tradition and its stone mansions. One of its most beautiful destinations is the famous Dimitsana.
Two and a half hours from Athens and one from Tripoli, built at an altitude of 950 m. above the valley of the river Lousios, stands the village of Dimitsana, the historical capital of the province of Gortynia.
In ancient times it was called Teuthis, while its present name dates from the 10th century, when the famous Monastery of the Philosopher was founded, from which six patriarchs emerged. Gregory V is the most known one.
In the 18th century, it already had a famous school and library, and it was developed financially by the gunpowder trade from which came the gunpowder which the Greeks used in the national revolution of 1821.
For its outstanding architecture, Dimitsana was declared a traditional settlement.
Walking along the main street will immediately let you know that it is one of the liveliest parts of the mountainous Arcadia, with several infrastructures, while the view of Lucius will fascinate you.
The library of Dimitsana, the ions of Timios Prodromos and Philosopher and the open-air museum of Hydrokinesis are some of the attractions of the area.
But you will discover more as you drift through the cobbled streets, as well as the many paths in a green "landscape".
An integral part of the experience is to stay in a traditional stone guesthouse and enjoy delicious grilled meats and well-prepared delicacies of the local cuisine in the nearby tavernas that exude a sense of warmth.
