The studio as behind Netflix's recent hit Castlevania, Powerhouse Animation Studios, will be telling the story of gods and heroes.
Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming animated series Blood of Zeus from the studio behind their hit adaptation of Konami's Castlevania, Powerhouse Animation Studios.
Previously known as Gods & Heroes, the 8 episode series is based on Greek mythology and will focus on Heron, a commoner who finds out he's the illegitimate son of Zeus and must defend humanity from an evil demon army.
Created by Greek American brothers Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, Blood of Zeus isn't their first time working with Greek mythology and anime. Their previous screenwriting credits include fantasy epic Immortals and the Netflix live action adaptation of Death Note.
In a press release, the Parlapanides brothers said “in [Blood of Zeus] we wanted to tell a wholly original story set in the beloved world of Greek mythology. We are thankful for such an amazing cast and for such great creative partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation, who continue to push the envelope and expand the anime genre in a manner we had only dreamed of.”
Blood of Zeus will be directed by Shaunt Nigoghossian (Justice League Action, Transformers Prime). And the voice cast includes Jason O'Mara (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) as Zeus, Derek Phillips (Friday Night Lights) as Heron, Claudia Christian (Babylon 5) as Hera with Jessica Henwick (Luke Cage) as Alexia.
This isn't the first time anime and greek mythology have clashed; the French/Japanese co-production Ulysees 31 was a sci-fi spin on the story of Odysseus (known as Ulysees in Latin). But perhaps the best known is Saint Seiya, a hugely popular shonen manga running from 1986 to 1990 which received a recent CGI reboot with Netflix's Knights of the Zodiac. There's some classic 80's anime vibes coming from Blood of Zeus and coming from the same studio as the hit Castlevania series, this could be a hit of epic proportions.
Blood of Zeus will be available to stream on Netflix from Oct 27.
