Large and small churches, secluded monasteries and small temples on the edge of cliffs are just some of the things that compose the picture of the Greek landscape in terms of religious monuments scattered from one end to the other. Some definitely manage to stand out because of their location or construction.
Something similar happens with a small church that Skyros can be proud of. It is Agios Nikolaos, literally built on a rock, in the location of Pouria, and the images you will see when you are there, or the ones you see in the photos, will leave you speechless.
This is because it seems to be standing in the middle of nowhere, waiting for worshippers to come by and light a candle. You will find it after passing through the settlement of Gyrismata. Surely, you could ask any local and he would easily guide you to this temple of special architecture on the island of Skyros.
The impressive rock on which the church stands is located where the ancient porphyry quarries used to be. So if you are there some time, you will see that the rock in the middle of nowhere, the church, the ancient quarry and the windmill form a wonderful place in Pouria of Skyros. The whitewashed little church inside is very small, simple and narrow and can barely fit 2-3 people. Upon entering, you will see a few pictures and some lit candles. On both sides of the small temple are the old quarry and the windmill overlooking the vast Aegean Sea.
Near Agios Nikolaos are other churches, such as Agia Paraskevi and Agios Ermolaos. It is definitely worth stopping there to take photos and light a candle. The landscape and the emotions you will feel will overwhelm you and fill you with images for a lifetime.
