A recent underwater survey has uncovered the hull of the Mentor, resting at a depth of approximately 10 meters.
A Ship with a Controversial Cargo
The Mentor sank in September 1802 at the entrance of Avlemonas harbor, off the southeastern coast of Kythera. This vessel is infamous for being one of the ships transporting a portion of the Parthenon Marbles—removed from the Acropolis and other Athenian monuments—to England via Malta.
Unveiling a Historic Wreck
The latest underwater investigation revealed that part of the ship's bow had broken off, likely due to the impact against the rocks as it went down. While much of its cargo was salvaged shortly after the wreck, the site remains a key archaeological point of interest, offering deeper insights into this controversial chapter of history.
