The archeological site of Ancient Aptera, southeast of the Gulf of Souda in Crete, was visited in the afternoon by the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, accompanied by their wives Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotaki and Susan Pompeo.
In Aptera, one of the most important city-states of Crete, which is gradually revealed by the excavations, they were welcomed by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni and along with the Chancellor of Chania, Eleni Papadopoulou, they were guided to the monuments.
At the ancient theater of Aptera, Mitsotakis and Pompeo, accompanied by their wives, stood in the thymele, in the center of the orchestra of the theater (which dates from the Hellenistic period) and had the opportunity to confirm its excellent acoustics thousands of years after its construction.
“It’s great, it’s a great experience”, Pompeo said when asked by reporters about his thoughts.
