COVID-19 cases see fresh spike in Greece

293 new infections, 5 deaths reported by National Public Health Organization

Greece on Wednesday confirmed 293 more cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours -- the highest daily spike since the outbreak began in the country.

According to the National Public Health Organization, 22 of the new cases were reported at the country's entry points.

The body added that five people died from the virus, bringing the total death toll to 248.

With the new cases, total infections now stand at 9,280, while health authorities have noted a rise in intensive-care patients between the ages 31 to 33.

Of the total number of infections 1,943 are linked to travelling abroad and 4,179 are related to an already-registered case.

The Attica region remains with the highest concentration of infections, with 103 confirmed cases. Thessaloniki is second with 54.
