Ancient Stageira: The birthplace of Aristotle from above

Aristotle is considered one of the greatest philosophers of all time, compared only with Plato, in terms of influence in the modern world.

He was born in 384 B.C. in Stageira on the northeastern coast of Chalkidiki, whose foundation dates back to 655 B.C. by people from the island of Andros.

After the Peloponnesian War, Stageira became a member of the first Athenian alliance, but in 424 B.C. there was an uprising and they allied themselves with the Spartans. This fact enraged the Athenians, who with General Cleon at the head, besieged the city in vain.

Aristotle died in 322 BC in Chalkida from a stomach disease. His body was transferred to Stageira, where he was buried with honors. In his memory a ceremony called "Aristoteleia" was held every year and the place where he was buried was chosen as the venue for the Congresses of Parliament.
