Lake Doxa : The small "Switzerland" of Greece next to Athens
Lake Doxa is located almost 2.5 hours from Athens at a distance of only 160 km, and yet most Athenians are not even aware of its existence.
The plain of Pheneos and the artificial lake Doxa is a wonderful destination, which can be seen from the settlement of Kastania and whose peaceful and divine view can be admired.
Many years ago there were two rivers in this place, Doxas and Olvios, which burst their banks in winter and destroyed the crops of the people. To solve this problem, the people built a dam, which made the place even more beautiful and turned it into a tourist destination for thousands of people of all ages.
The most famous place of the Doxa Lake is the small chapel of Saint Fanourios, built in the 14th century and abandoned in the 17th century because of a flood. It is located in the heart of the lake and is usually reflected in the calm waters.
Doxa Lake is a place where you can walk along its beautiful shores, cycle along its 10 km radius and also go fishing.
During the last excavation in ancient Pheneos, a wall and a small temple from 345 BC were found.
