What was Panepistimiou Street like in the ‘50s?

On the left is the Nikoloudis Mansion, in its 1938 form. Next is a building from the 1930s, the work of the architect Rennos Koutsouris, which was demolished in 1975.

On the corner of Pesmazoglou Stoa was located the Laiki Bank (today’s Alpha Bank). On the opposite corner is the Arsakeio, where the Council of State is currently housed.

And further is located the New Arsakeio. The low building between Arsaki and Santaroza has been demolished and in its place has been created the Justice Square. Finally, in the background can be seen the Majestic Hotel, which nowadays is hidden behind scaffolding and burlap.

The photo was taken by Benedict A. Caccia, a sailor of  the USS.S. Allen M. Sumner, which while on its way to Korea to reinforce the American forces made a brief stop in Piraeus.
