Valia Calda: A dream valley in Greece
Valia Calda is a beautiful valley, hidden between the prefectures of Ioannina and Grevena, in one of the most important and untouched forests of Greece. It is a deep and narrow valley in North Pindos, which is quite inaccessible. Around the valley are the mountains Lygkos and Mavrovouni, and there at an altitude of 1,400 meters, the presence of people is rare.
It may not be easy to get to Valia Calda, and getting there may require a certain amount of fitness, but the result will be more rewarding than you think.
Just remember that you will be in part of the 69,000 hectares of Pindos National Park. And although Valia Calda means "warm valley", it is not exactly that. To be precise, not just a valley, but an ecosystem of rare beauty, surrounded by the peaks of the Pindos, running water, forests and even endangered species.
The beautiful valley is crossed by several streams and rivers. The most famous and important is the Arkoudorema, a tributary of the Aoos.
If you visit the area, you should definitely visit one of its most beautiful villages.
Its name is Vovousa, which is one of the villages near Valia Calda The village of Vovousa has become famous for one of its special features. It is the only Greek village that is divided in two by a river.
Staying there, especially in autumn and winter, is a unique experience. You will love the smell of a fireplace, the absolute peace and the traditional local delicacies.
You will need several days in order to explore it. And for sure it is worth going there at least 4 times, once for each season of the year. In this way you will have completed the puzzle of one of the most beautiful valleys not only in Greece but also in Europe.
