Concern for Santorini: "If an Earthquake Over 6 Richter Occurs, a Volcanic Eruption Is Possible"
Experts and residents are alarmed by the seismic activity between Santorini and Amorgos, as tremors are occurring repeatedly and increasing in intensity.
Concerns are growing among experts and locals regarding the seismic sequence between Santorini and Amorgos, as the tremors are continuous and intensifying. The fear is that these tremors may be foreshocks, potentially leading to a larger earthquake, possibly exceeding 6 on the Richter scale. Some scientists do not rule out the possibility that such an earthquake could trigger a volcanic eruption.
According to petrologist-volcanologist Dimitris Kostopoulos, who spoke to SKAI, "If an earthquake above 6 Richter occurs, we assume that a volcanic eruption is possible, particularly if the quake happens near Santorini and is strong enough."
He explained: "Earthquakes result from the fracturing and slipping of rock formations. The so-called 'volcanic earthquakes' have an expansive component that allows magma to rise. We observe the seismic focal points shifting upward as magma enters the crust, nesting at shallower levels and forming 'magma chambers'."
"Regarding the island of Anydro, the earthquakes there are tectonic. This means their force and surface determine their magnitude. We could see magma rise. These tectonic earthquakes are far from Kolumbo and Santorini, and seismologists estimate their magnitudes to be around 5. However, if a large earthquake occurs, it could alter the stress field over a considerable distance. If the seismic fault is near Kolumbo, this shift in stress could lead to decompression of the magma chamber," he emphasized.
