A statue from the Hellenistic period was discovered in a black garbage bag next to a trash bin in Thessaloniki, Macedonia. Authorities are investigating the case.

The Subdivision for Organized Crime of Northern Greece is conducting a preliminary investigation following the discovery of a Hellenistic-era statue in Thessaloniki by a 32-year-old local resident.

Specifically, on the night of Saturday, January 18, the man visited the Thermaikos Crime Investigation Department and handed over the statue, which he reportedly found inside a black bag near a trash bin.

An archaeologist from the relevant Antiquities Ephorate was informed and examined the statue, confirming that it falls under the applicable cultural heritage protection laws. Consequently, the statue was seized by officers from the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of the Department for Combating Human and Goods Trafficking, who are now investigating the case.

The ancient artifact will be sent to the Northern Greece Forensic Investigation Subdivision for laboratory analysis and then to the relevant Antiquities Ephorate for safekeeping and evaluation.
