Renowned academic and professor at the University of Southern California, Kostas Synolakis, made a striking claim during an interview with ERTNews' "Prime"—we may be witnessing the birth of a brand-new volcano for the first time in history.

During his upcoming visit to Santorini with the Prime Minister, Synolakis emphasized the importance of installing tide gauges, a crucial scientific instrument for monitoring sea level changes and potential tsunamis. He noted that although 10 such devices exist across the Aegean, the region needs at least four more to track potential seismic shifts.

Seismic Activity and a Growing Volcanic Complex

Discussing recent seismic activity, the disaster risk expert stated:
"I believe there is a flow of liquid material slowly rising from deep within the Earth toward Anydros. If this continues, we might witness—possibly for the first time in the world—the formation of a new volcano."

While emphasizing that an eruption is not imminent, Synolakis pointed out that volcanologists are seriously considering this scenario. If confirmed, this would mean the Santorini volcanic complex is expanding, potentially leading to the emergence of new craters alongside Santorini and Kolumbo.

This revelation raises significant scientific and safety considerations, as Santorini remains one of the most active volcanic areas in Europe.
