Greece is grappling with widespread disruptions as a severe weather system delivers heavy snowfall, torrential rain, and powerful storms, prompting school closures and roadblocks, particularly in northern regions.

Intense snowfall has blanketed areas of Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, and the mountains of Thessaly. Meanwhile, strong winds are battering the Aegean and Ionian Seas, exacerbating travel difficulties.

In Macedonia and Thrace, snow and heavy rain have led to road closures and hazardous driving conditions. Villages in Halkidiki are buried under thick layers of snow, with snowplows working around the clock to maintain access.

Across northern Greece, schools remained closed in numerous municipalities on Monday, with snow chains required on several roads. Further south, severe weather caused disruptions in Fthiotida and Evrytania, while in Athens, heavy rainstorms brought traffic to a standstill, and Mount Parnitha’s access road was shut down due to snow.

In the southern Peloponnese, Kalamata bore the brunt of the weather, as flooding and landslides swept away vehicles and boats, leaving coastal businesses in ruins. Ferry services on the Rio–Antirio route were suspended due to gale-force winds.

According to the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), parts of Eastern Peloponnese and Central Greece recorded significant rainfall by midday Monday.

The National Meteorological Service has forecast continued rain and snowfall across the country on Tuesday, with an expected easing of conditions by the afternoon.
