In the heart of Tzoumerka lies an unknown village in the midst of firs, pines and arbutus
In the center of Tzoumerka, 45 km southeast of Ioannina and 55 kilometers northwest of Arta, in an alpine landscape at an altitude of 650 meters lies a beautiful village, Agnanta.
It is a small village with about 800 inhabitants, surrounded by firs, plane trees, pines and arbutus.
The rich vegetation and the natural flowing waters are the characteristics of the village and one of the reasons why so many travelers visit it. It is located in the basin formed by the mountains Tzoumerka and Xirovouni and has its highest point οn the mountain and the lowest to be almost sprinkled by the river Arachthos.
Through the middle of the village flows the Agnantitikos (torrent that flows into the Arachthos river), which divides the village into two districts. One district is higher and correspondingly lower in altitude than the other.
The word Agnanta derives from the adjective "Agnantos" which means "open place" from which we can observe what is happening not only around us but also in distance.
In the past, the village consisted of small neighborhoods with small houses, but in a prominent location: Konakia, Plakes, Zifkos, Villia, Kerasia.
From these places, the inhabitants looked at the opposite mountain (Xerovouni) to see who was "going and coming from Ioannina" and this is how the name was born. Later, the village was moved to its present location, but kept its present name.
The natural landscape of Agnanta village is unique. The visitor will see imposing natural landscapes and unique stone bridges, traditional wells and historical monasteries.
Agnanta is a village with dense buildings and amphitheatrically arranged. The courtyards of the houses are spacious, paved, planted with flowers on the edges and above them stretch the vines. In the alleys there is a ditch with water from the mountain to irrigate the gardens. Most of the houses are of dark hewn stone, one-storied, two-storied, and three-storied, according to the place where they are built and the slope of the ground. The roofs of the houses are covered with dark slabs or tiles.
After exploring the picturesque streets of the village, you can visit many sights of the area, such as the post-Byzantine monument of Agia Faneromeni, the two water mills, which are protected monuments, the monastery of Kipina, the cave of Pramanta, the waterfalls. a.
Those who love nature can climb the mountain with the imposing peak Strogoula (over 2,000 meters), rafting or kayaking on the river Arachthos (8 km from Agnanta) and horseback riding in nearby Aetorachi.
