The fortress or better known as the castle of Kassiopi is located on the north side of the island of Corfu and was crucial in the defense organization of the island. It is located near the fishing village of the same name, Kassiopi, and was one of the three castles from the Byzantine period that provided defensive fortifications for the island. From there, the Corfu Strait could be monitored, always standing out for its high strategic importance.

Apart from this, the castle of Kassiopi also stands out because it is a saved architectural remnant that is rarely found on Ionian Islands. It is no coincidence that thousands of visitors go there every year to see it, admire it and learn its history.

However, apart from the important history that is known, there is also a legend that accompanies the fortress. It is said that the city was abandoned after about 100 years had passed since its construction. The cause was not a disease or a battle, but a dragon. The legend says that the dragon with fire coming out of its mouth, killed most of the inhabitants of the area.

Those who survived the attack left the place to save themselves. Others say that the legend is basically just an analogy. It can be said that the dragon is the cannons and gunpowder that were used during the siege.
