Unknown Greece : The sunken ancient bridge and the crater with the water lily forest (video)
The mysterious sunken bridge
In earlier years, Agios Athanasios was connected to the neighboring island Agios Konstantinos by a 210-meter-long artificial stone bridge. Today, part of the stone construction can be seen at the bottom of the sea.
According to F. Negris, it was a pier made of stones weighing 20-60 kg and was four meters wide. According to one version, it was built by the inhabitants of the area during the Byzantine Empire, while another view is that it was built a few centuries earlier and sank after a geological change.
The amazing crater with water lilies
In the wider area of Itea we find several craters, which for some are the result of geological changes and for others the result of meteorite showers, in fact some believe that an Armageddon took place in the area several million years ago.
But the most beautiful crater is the one located next to the two islands. But few know of its existence and that is because it is not visible from the road that connects Galaxidi to Itea. It is a beautiful and at the same time impressive crater with a diameter of 150 meters and a depth of about 50 meters, inside which you can find a rare mixture of hydrophytes and giant water lilies. A visit to this area is considered necessary as it can be combined with both a visit to the beautiful and picturesque Galaxidi and a visit to the imposing and historic Delphi, considered the navel of the earth.
