The beautiful and famous Greek village once called Tigani
There are villages which have a history of a few years, and others of centuries. Settlements where an event or a person has completely changed their course in history and very often their name.
One of these villages is very well known in Greece and once had a very strange name. It was called Tigani (pan in Greek).
Today it is called Pythagorion of Samos. This well-known village in Samos, an island where the great philosopher Pythagoras came from. The name Tigani is not so old as the village is called Pythagorion less than a century. A visit to such a place is necessary if you get the opportunity.
The settlement has been so named since 1955. The name was given by the International Organization of Pythagoras, in honor of the great philosopher Pythagoras, who came from Samos. And so the village became better known. Few people still remember the old name, and if you tell them that you come from Tigani, they look at you strangely.
After all, it's an honor for the residents to call their village that, which they'll confirm when you're there. Apart from the great historical name, this village is also very beautiful and picturesque. Where Pythagoras is located today was once the ancient city of Samos. It is the same with the port, which was already pointed out by Herodotus. He called it a wonderful part of the island, while at the same time it is considered the oldest artificial port in the Mediterranean.
Indeed, there stands the statue of Pythagoras, a modern sculpture depicting Pythagoras with his famous theorem. If you are in Samos at any time of the year, you absolutely must stop by Pythagorion. It is, after all, only fifteen minutes from Vathi. In summer it becomes a cosmopolitan place, so if you want to be a bit more relaxed, it's better to be on the island in spring or autumn. Each season has something different to offer and lets you have a good time.
