Discovering Diversity of Women’s Costumes in Greece as UCLA and the Benaki Collaborate

ATHENS -- The history of Greece, with its many actors and many acts, its stitched into the traditional regional costumes of Greek women. “Hellenic Together,” a new lecture series organized collaboratively by two Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) grantees, kicks off with a look at the sartorial family tree of these garments.

The series is a new collaboration between the SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Benaki Museum in Athens.

“The Costumes of Women in Greece: Styles and References,” free and open to the public with advance registration, will take place on Saturday, November 7. Lectures on immured vessels in post-Byzantine churches, art critic Christian Zervos, and how a museum professional curates Greek history.

The SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture at UCLA, a hub for teaching and research in anthropology, archaeology, art history, classics, digital humanities, Greek, history, and philosophy, received a foundational $5 million grant from SNF in 2017 and launched in 2020. SNF has provided support for various projects at the Benaki museum, including free admission initiatives.
