Mycenae, a hilltop fortress on the Peloponnesian Peninsula, dominated the Greek world between 1600 and 1200 B.C., a thousand years before Athens' Golden Age. A treasure trove of gold unearthed in the 19th century has lead archeologists to believe Mycenae is Homer's fabled city "rich in gold."
