Delos The Island of Gods, Apollo, Unesco Heritage
The Agora of the Delians on the Sacred Way, Delos, Cyclades Pilgrims. chanting and adorned with flowers, reached the sanctuaries via the Sacred Way, a broad processional road.
It was lined with votive offerings, and there were columned halls (stoas) and gathering places (agoras) along the route.
Unfortunately, there is no description of Delos by ancient writers; therefore archaeologists often find themselves at a loss as to a building’s function or purpose. The square in this photograph is known as the Agora of the Delians, but it may well have served as a market rather than a place for meetings.
