Monemvasia: The beautiful hidden city of Greece on the slopes of a huge rock

It is called Monemvasia and is a place of incomparable beauty, but also of extraordinary historical importance.

The spectacle is unique: a huge, steep, 300 meter high cliff in the middle of the sea. On one of its slopes, there is a medieval town, wedged in by walls, ramparts and towers.

The famous castle of Monemvasia was built in 375 AD, when the rock broke away from the land in a big earthquake. There the hunted Lacon Greeks, who suffered from the barbarian raids, very quickly built a castle. The castle walls still look inaccessible and impress the visitors.

Only 10-20 families live in the castle, but every year thousands of tourists cross the bridge to admire it and feel like they are in a time machine. One has the feeling of living in a bygone era, and he can imagine the battles that took place there as he walks through the impressive stone streets of the medieval state and the passages with the high arches.

First of all, you will take a walk in the lower town. The Upper Town was first built on the top of the rock, and it was there that the lords and administrators of the town lived. Today it is deserted and definitely worth a visit by walking on the stony, winding path that leads uphill. There is also the church of Hagia Sophia, built by the wife of Emperor Andronikos in memory of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.

The lower town is reminiscent of a small labyrinth and has impressive architecture and many tourist shops, hostels and restaurants. There are also 40 Byzantine churches, each with its own history and unique atmosphere.

The stone houses, the cobbled streets, the special architecture and the strong walls remind the visitor of times when Monemvasia was one of the most important castles of the Peloponnese, a commercial center and a place of historical battles.
